REAL Existentialist Themes
Responsibility
An essential component to existentialism is the idea of free-will. However, "with power comes great responsibility" - Uncle Ben. Existentialists believe the authentic life is lived by a man who makes his decision outside of the influence of government and religion. Therefore, one cannot blame his actions on anyone but himself; the existentialist takes full responsibility of his actions.
Existence
Since existentialists shun religion, they believe there is no given purpose to human life. Because of this, they create their own purpose in life. Everybody must answer the question "What is the meaning of life?" in his own way. Although the purpose of each life is different, all of them have one thing in common - the certainty of death.
Anxiety
Due to the stress of responsibility and having no given meaning to life, existentialists face inevitable anxiety. People who are weaker, existentialists believe, create government, religion, and morals to relieve themselves of this anxiety.
Loneliness
The belief that everybody creates his purpose in life leads to a lonely existence. Even though many people occupy the same space, their existences are separate because no two people follow the same path in life. Since everyone lives a different life, one man cannot make decisions for another. Making these decisions alone leaves existentialists with nobody to confide in.
